| Magazine Advertising VERSUS Google Ads
Magazine Advertising
Magazine Advertising keeps many sub-standard publications afloat. The umpteen, same old- same old, rarely anything new, lifestyle magazines are cheif among these. Environmentally damaging (we are talking entire forests) and, for their advertisers, infamously difficult to monitor ("please mention you saw us in this obscure magazine").
For Advertising buyers, Magazine advertising is expensive too. For a full page we are talking - best agency price - of £11.20 per 1,000, distribution plus Artwork - so £1,344 + artwork + VAT - for a less prominent page. But, on top of all this, the Return on Investment (ROI) from Magazine Advertising is - even when it can be proven - low. If a 3% response is above average this points to a very low ROI.
Google Ads
Online Advertising, but particularly Google Ads, are not guilty of any of the above. Google Ads produce a much higher ROI than Magazine ads - but I would say that! Fortunately, nowadays, there is there is sufficient, readily available, evidence to support my claims.
Most of my evidence comes from companies who, after seeing the healthy ROI they have achieved from Google adword ads, have done the obvious and significantly increased their Adword spend. First some anecdotal evidence from an online entrepreneur:
"Google Adword Campaigns Achieving 600% ROI!"
Google offers determinable ROIs to Advertisers via their Adword Program. Anecdotal evidence, by small investors, report ROIs of up to 600% and 350% READ HERE. Many larger companies increased their spends on Google adwords dramatically during 2008 - we can only speculate on their ROIs - but facts are figures are available about their Adword spends and these suggest healthy profit margins/ROI.
CASE STUDIES: Selling Office Stationery and Computer Products Online
SEE OfficeDepot.com Report
OfficeDepot are spending on adwords and seemingly setting no ceiling - presumably the ROI must be established and dependable. SInce July 2006 they have spent between $21,230 and $66,480 per day which has generated between 48,300 and 71,300 potential clients per day or relevant traffic to their website. Wholesale Stationery Prices sometimes allow 100% markup but we calculated pessimistically that if the average profit from these visitors - including non purchasers - was $1.50 - these would generate profits between $72,450 and $106,950 per day.
SEE dell.com Report
Since July 2006 dell.com have been spending up to $209.38k per day on Google Adwords and generating between 219,000 and 285,000 click-through to their sites.
SEE Xomba.com Report
Xomba is at the other end of the scale from dell.com in Google spend. This is an article publishing site which relies on the income it generates from publishing Google ads alongside its articles. It splits the revenue 50/50 with its writers. With tens of thousands of articles on a wide variety of subjects the site will receive most of its traffic through generic search listings. Yet it still sees value in Adwords to attract new writers and the new revenue streams each represents. Xomba are reported to have started spending up to $3 dollars a day on AdWords in July 2007 but increased this, dramatically, to $28 per day (900%) in July 2008.
